Mount Kenya Climbing, Naro moru route

This is the most popular route on the mountain and also the least demanding physically. Expect to see more tourists on this route than the other two. It does not have as many dramatic views as the other and the much known `vertical bog’ is on this route.

Chogoria route is the most scenic of the 3 tourist routes and its more challenging to hike.

This route is found on the drier northwestern side of the mountain and you see views of the greater Laikipia Plateau from here. The glacier carved valleys; as well as jugged peaks are some of the highlights on this route.

Kenya, the western circuit

The "Western Circuit" takes you through some of the excellent climbing, camping, game viewing and walking opportunities which includes, Kakamega Forest, Mt. Elgon, Saiwa Swamp, Nasalot, Sth. Turkana, Kamnarok, Kerio Valley, Lake Bogoria, Maasai Mara.

Climbing Kilimanjaro- Machame Route.

A tarmac road serves Machame village. There is a park checkpoint at the start of the route. The hiking is strenuous, initially up narrow, slippery paths through beautiful forest. It provides good access to the South Western Glaciers and the Western Breach.

Climbing Kilimanjaro- Marangu Route.

This is popularly known as the -tourist route-. It-s a pretty easy hike unto Kibo hut (about 15,000ft) where it begins to get steep in the scree or snow or ice depending on the weather. There are huts and camping grounds along this route. The lower sections provide fine forest and moorland walking. The lunar landscape of the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi(the two main peaks) is a site to behold.

Climbing Kilimanjaro- Umbwe Route.

A very strenuous hike up steep, slippery trails with many fallen trees to negotiate. The middle section follows a narrow spectacular ridge with magnificent views of the Great Barranco and Southern Ice fields.

Climbing Kilimanjaro- Lemosho Glades route.

This magnificent variation to the Shira Route is as yet unspoilt and little used. It takes trails through forests rich in game south of the Shira Route. On day 3 the Machame Route is rejoined.

Climbing Kilimanjaro- Rongai Route.

Only a limited number of groups are allowed on the route at any time and it is not usually used for descent. This route is a quick and direct way to the summit but it is strenuous and therefore requires one to be in good shape and well acclimated.
